What type of movie or role should Leonardo DiCaprio take on next?

By Alan Chenkin – Learned about celebrities reading tabloids in the checkout line.

I would like to see Leonardo DiCaprio to take on strong roles with causes he believes in, like Climate Change.  Not unlike Kevin Costner in “WaterWorld”. Bruce Dern also chooses roles to promote causes, like “Silent Running[1] [2].

As an aside, Adam West was in the “Swamp Thing” series[3], most likely more for a paycheck than saving the environment, at that point in his career.  His “swamp Thing” character was eclipsed by his Batman persona.
Leonardo DiCaprio is a wonderfully capable actor (yes, I am a fan) and will excel in almost any role he chooses, or even produces/directs.
While I am looking forward to his next role, my crystal ball is not good at casting actor’s future direction.

Who is or was the most successful child star (including former child stars) of all time?

This is a popular topic, as child stars have more time before the camera (in their careers) than most other actors – especially if they live a long and prosperous life!

Child Star: An AutobiographyThere Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and MeEmma Watson: From Wizards to Wallflowers (Pop Culture Bios)

From the Web:
The child actors who grew big stars – IMDB
26 child stars who made it – Entertainment Weekly
The 10 Most Successful Former Child Stars – Goliath
The Most Successful Child Actors – Fortune

If you take time to look at these lists, we can see actors across decades of film and Television projects. This makes monetary comparisons difficult, due to differing dollar values and payment structures, unless we adjust for estimated lifetime earnings. Money should not be the only measure of success. Many child stars had rough upbringings with drug issues, familial mismanagement, famous parents, and more.  Shirley Temple black leveraged her fame into a successful career in politics:

Shirley Temple Black was an American actress, singer, dancer, businesswoman, and diplomat who was Hollywood’s number one box-office draw as a child actress from 1935 to 1938. As an adult, she was named United States ambassador to Ghana and to Czechoslovakia, and also served as Chief of Protocol of the United States. From Wikipedia

Many became directors like Ron Howard and Drew Barrymore. some faded into the background and live off their residual check, in relative obscurity.

We all know who we like as a grown up actor, but this is a question worthy of months of review – my answer is that there are many stars who have done well acting and become successful, given back to their fan base, and evolved into adults who are positive role models.
Here is a picture of my Grandson, now age 10, who is available for acting roles. get in touch with me (as his agent) to discuss auditions.

Best of luck to all the child actors, and success on their path to adulthood.

Why doesn’t a rich, handsome celebrity like Leonardo DiCaprio have a wife?

Mr. DiCaprio has made comment on his single status several times.

On getting married one day: “That time will come when that time comes. The truth is, you can’t predict marriage. You can’t plan it. It’s just going to happen when it happens.” [1]
In 2014, while chatting with CBS News, he said, “I mean, the truth is, it’s gonna happen when it’s gonna happen. And — and I — I — you know, I’m just gonna let it happen naturally.”[2]
Who is he attracted to?
Leo told TV host Gayle King he looks for “humility, a sense of humour and not a lot of drama” in his girlfriends.[3]
As (George) Clooney said during the 2015 Golden Globes, while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love. Even better if you’ve been waiting your whole life.”[4]
Marriage is not the single focus of this active thespian and businessman; he is working hard to act, produce, and promote his causes (like climate change).

Personally, I am a fan, and hope Leo finds success in romance as well as his work.

What would you tell an actor who is paying more attention to helping children, the Earth, and/or animals than their actual acting career?

(Referring to Alicia Silverstone, and how she left her movie career)

Alicia Silverstone was clearly not getting the support and “push” to develop her career further, so she decided to dedicate herself to causes that she found meaningful. If YOU felt that YOU wanted to see more of her presence in films as an actress, YOU could write to her and suggest that she has a fan base that wants to see her in more projects. Don’t expect her to go out and jump into any film roles – she has goals she set for herself. She obviously has the financial means to pursue her goals, and I wish her well in anything she puts her heart and mind to.

Some actors are in desperate pursuit of stardom, and hardly turn down a role. Think of Nicolas Cage, who will do almost any film, and is a hard working actor that delivers a lot of performances that reward him with a large fan base and the compensation to pay his bills and support his causes.

Conversely, some actors, like Jim Carrey (as an example) want to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor, and tried so hard he failed miserably; His fans wanted to see the crazy Jim Carrey doing his comedic schtick, and did not care for his dramatic turn. The fans felt dissapointed, and didn’t go to his serious films.

There are many times I wonder why someone was cast in a role that did not showcase their talents, or watch wonderful and creative actors perform in a few roles and then drop out of sight. Many actors and actresses succumb to mental illness and addiction.

While we may adore performers who excel in their work – yet are not driven or fulfilled, it is incumbent upon us as fans to let them pursue their careers in and out of performing.
I would advise such actors to follow their path – as a fan I will enjoy their successes, even if it is not my vision for their careers. And if it just happens to be “helping children, the Earth, and/or animals” ? – I say Wonderful! We need more visible, vocal, and motivating voices for these causes.

The Last Word:

Who are the most overpaid actors in Hollywood?

While there are subjective opinions on who the most over paid actors are, the one metric that is most telling is how the box office take relates to the actors pay. This separates the highly paid actor with good box office from the overpaid actor producing poor box office numbers.

Forbes has done some really good work on this:

This 2016 list does not mean that these actors were overpaid in prior years; Forbes measures it year-by-year. Some actors have a few great years, then get cast in stinker roles that diminish their box office draw, and reduce their value to the profitability of the picture. It does not mean they are “bad” actors, just not bringing in more dollars than they cost.

The real question is WHY? why do these overpaid actors keep getting work? I found some websites that attempt to answer this very question, on a “case by case” basis:
It also has to do with How Movie Stars Get Paid – Gawker

We can clearly see how actors salaries are a clear metric we can use in determining their value at the box office, and “overpaid” can be more than just an opinion, it comes with measurable numbers behind it.

These guys may have the last laugh:

The principal benefit acting has afforded me is the money to pay for my psychoanalysis.” ―Marlon Brando -(Source/Notes: Marlon Brando: The Only Contender, Gary Carey (1985), Ch.13)

NOTE:  This is not a “dig” against your personal favorite movie star or film, it is just a way to determine if an actor is overpaid by comparing their salary to the box office.  I am a fan of most of these actors and wish they will be off this list too!
