Burning Man, the annual festival in the Nevada desert, attracts many people – known as “Burners”.  In the past, Celebrities have made the pilgrimage to see the man burn.

While some celebrities quietly attend the festival, others treat it as a media experience.  Movie star Susan Sarandon stayed in a celebrity camp at Burning Man in 2015.  Her visit was showcased in This Insider.

Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, and Mark Zuckerberg erect fancy luxury camps in advance, many others arrive to the playa with no plan and pitch their tents where they find space.

There is even a concierge service, to provide elite burners services and facilities above and beyond what mere attendees are offered.  See the website, Burners.me .

Google maps created the unofficial 2018 map of Burning man.

Among attendees in the past, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Diplo, Katy Perry, an assortment of Victoria’s secret models (Sara Sampaio goes every year), Leonardo DiCaprio, and many others.   Burning man requires some preparation,   and burners need to bring a weeks worth of food, bottled water, funky and practical clothes, Goggles, face masks (for dust storms), and items for giving and exchanging.  Diplo comes in a huge “Art Car”.   If you are not handy, you can buy Burning man outfits on Amazon and eBay.

Here is the wikipedia entry on Burning man.

Getting around the Playa is done by foot, tricked out bicycle, and Art cars, which are the only vehicles allowed.  (RV’s  and cars are parked for the entire week).

If you are a Burner or just fascinated with Burning Man, take note of who attends – This may be one of the coolest festivals on the Planet!

IF you are reading this after attending burning man, please attend a “decompression event”.  Note this article from the NY Post.

The Last Word:

Do Celebrities always act mean to Paparazzi?

In the start of their careers, many actors want the paparazzi to capture them, to add to their fame and marketability. Their agents and even friends “leak” their locations to tabloids and paparazzi just to increase their exposure. (Ask anyone who dated a Kardashian).

When (or “if”) they become famous, and seek any amount of privacy, it is hard to stop the location leaks, drone pictures, sidewalk ambushes, etc. from the paparazzi. Smart celebrities almost always give the paparazzi an opportunity to take some shots before their meeting or event, giving them what they want, in exchange for leaving them be (for a little while). Others can be downright mean to the photographers, especially if they are overly intrusive.

There are many incidents where paparazzi have been overly zealous about taking pictures, and have been assaulted by actors. (take a look at When Celebrities Attack: Top 10 Paparazzi Confrontations, on zimbio). Many times the paparazzi “egg on” the celebrities, to get more salable pictures – even if they risk arrest or jail time. In many cases, the celebrity can be arrested for assault, or the paparazzi can get a restraining order. There is a fine line between the tabloids need for fresh pics of famous people and the safety of actors and their families; many actors and actresses work hard to keep their locations and family (children, siblings, parents) away from the spotlight. They don’t want their children to grow up hiding from photographers or being exploited in the tabloids. It is also a safety issue, and bodyguards frequently intervene when paparazzi take unwanted pictures.Today we are bombarded with cell phone cameras, long zoom cameras, drone cameras, easily hidden body and handbag cams – not to mention businesses that have surveillance cameras for their establishments. Even the average person is photographed often and discreetly. When you add the paparazzi into that mix, they can behave like a pack of rabid dogs or polite professionals as part of the publicity game.

Today almost anyone can be a paparazzi, just make sure you have a cell phone with a good camera.  And I hope no celebrity will take offense at your taking their picture!

Keep in mind that not all celebrities are “in character” when on their own time.   Some are accommodating to fans, others guard their privacy and shun the spotlight.   So be respectful, and if asking for a selfie or autograph, move on so your idol can have his or her privacy.
May you be fortunate to have wonderful encounters with your heroes of film and stage.

Why do famous people only date famous people?

By Alan Chenkin, Learned about celebrities by reading the tabloids in the checkout aisle.
First of all, Famous people (aka Celebrities) don’t all date famous people. We hear more about celebrities dating each other when their publicists and the media and the paparazzi cover their dating habits. Many well known people work hard at keeping their private lives private, especially their personal relationships.  Here are some links that go both ways on this topic:
It is usually more stressful on the non-celebrity who is dating a celebrity; they sometimes have a lot of difficulty adapting to the onslaught of press and paparazzi – and may have friends gossiping about them to the tabloids!
I hope your eyes have been opened on this, and you look beyond the fleeting fame and see that celebrities have the need for both famous dates and normal lives. Keeping them in perspective, well, that is a challenge.

What offends you most about Hollywood celebrities?

By Alan Chenkin, Learned about celebrities reading magazines at the supermarket checkout
The one thing that both offends and intrigues me about celebrities is their hypocrisy and denial, sometimes shallow – sometimes calculated – that makes them so entertaining!
Figure that celebrities need a following, and do everything to get the paparazzi to “catch” them having pizza or making out in a park, and when they get a modicum of fame, denounce the paparazzi as a pack of wolves and predators stalking them 24/7. (can you have it both ways?).
Remember its not just Hollywood….. This is an entertaining film related to this topic:
No matter what, celebrity watching and what they do for the fame and their fan base is astounding!
